If you inform yourself, have some knowledge about what you actually are going to buy and what you want to buy then you will be in a better negotiation seat.

Don't just visit one place and let the car dealers know that you are actively looking around for best options.

The salesman has a job to do to!. Make some base decisions before you visit the dealerships, new car or used car check out the loan options available, research your finance costs. The automotive industry is just as competitive as the other market places you don't have to be pushed by the dealer.

My response is usually: I am broke, wishing I could buy some gum, but I saw these nice shiny cars and couldnt resist. Or: I take the bus because cars are evil.

Truth is, if you know exactly what you want, you can simply send out a quote request to all the dealers in your area--but if you are using this approach, be sure you are committed to buying it within a certain time period (e.g. 3 days). No salesman needed. I hate car salesman.

One trick I use is to look around the lot and find a color that isn't available (whether I wanted it or not) and act upset if they dont have it.

Usually they'll try to make you happy by giving you more money off to settle for a different color.

I am an independent dealer and I don't sell extended warranties yet, but some are worth it and some arn't. Weigh out your options and know what you want before you buy. Don't be talked into something your not sure if you want. You can ALWAYS add it later.

I totally agree with the car salesmen thing. Dealing with them can be really frustrating as I myself found out on more than one occasion, and really good advice on the warranty. Really useful. Thanks.

As someone who has been in the motor trade for over 40 years I can unfortunatly only agree with you on how aggressive these sales guys can be.

The thing to remember though is its not usually their own fault, its more likely to be that of their managers and the pressures they are under to hit target.

Great post thanks

Thank you all for your excellent comments. It's so important to do your homework on a new car.

@Dan - yes, we're the ones who will be paying for that car for a long time to come!

Very useful information. It's better to find the correct details about the vehicle before you buy it. Most of the salesmen gives us the idea that nothing can go wrong. But we are the ones who are going to buy the car and we are the ones who are going to pay for it. So it's very important to find out the correct details before you buy a vehicle.

As with everything, you will make a better choice (money wise) if you do your own research.

About liners like these

This car won’t be here tomorrow
We’re losing our shirt on this deal

When a thing sounds to good, then probably it's not, especially with car salesmen.

A good car salesman should leave these liners out and have a more neutral approach based on product facts(and of course exaggerate it a little).

You are definitely so true but without proper guide, how can you have an ideal car you've always wanted?

Sometimes you need to reevaluate how a salesperson approach you. You may find it hard but some of the given info might be essential.

Though having a perfect car does not guarantee safety, checkout latest gadget that might help you avoid car accidents...

Good warranty advice. I have been in the Car Business for years. I don't reccommend warranties from the dealer. I am still in the Car Buisness and put together a website at http://www.Smart-Car-Buying.com
